The Wait Was Hard

For five years I was on SSI Disability for my mental health issues.. agoraphobia to be exact. (Although I didn't know about Medicare part D plan at the time, I was also on Medicaid to cover my doctor and other medical needs.)

SSI Disability for mental health issues isn't always easy to get. In fact I was turned down the first time and had to reapply. I think perhaps it's harder to prove some mental health issues than it is to diagnosis and approve physical disabilities.

The long wait was hard. I had no income other than what my daughter brought in from working at Pizza Hut. Oh wait. I was receiving state assistance because she was under the age of eighteen at the time. It wasn't much but it was better than nothing, to be sure.

These days the airways are covered with commercials for lawyers willing to help you get your disability claim accepted. I wish I'd had someone or someplace to turn to back then. Ah well.. things turned out well when all is said and done.

Some of you may wonder why I'm still not on it because you know I still have agoraphobia. I'm sure I still would qualify but I got married in 2005 and with Mr. Skittles having an income I was no longer in need of it and was disqualified.

Even with a physical disability from birth doesn't exactly make it easy to get SSI benefits. My ex roommate has CP, from birth, and the entire time I lived with her she was fighting to be qualified as she was unable to find a full time job.

thanks for your comment on my blog about Berry College. I think that you are amazing. Your willingness to share about yourself. I know of some people wouldn't get married as they would be afraid to lose their SSI.Thanks for sharing. rose
