Number One Song

Some of my best ideas for blog posts come from email I receive. An email this morning had me seeing what the #1 song was on the day I was born.

I followed THIS LINK and clicked on the month, then the day, then I found the year.

Here's my song:

Just A Quickie

Just a quickie..

Not too long ago I asked which would you rather give up forever.. sex or chocolate. Most of you said chocolate.

Now I have a similar question.

Which of THESE would you give up forever.. sex or your computer?

Heads Or Tails #62 - Tell A Scary Story

You can play this at Heads Or Tails!

*****************

We used to do a lot of family camping and like most families we would gather around the campfire after dark for burning toasting marshmallows, making Smores, singing campfire songs, and the telling of ghost stories.

It was my job to tell the ghost stories actually. Here are two of the favorites.

Story One:

I would ask if anyone had seen the news that day. Everyone would say no. So then I would begin..

"Ten years ago some people got murdered at this very campground. There was a huge manhunt after the police found out who had done it. It was actually a group of parents who cornered him not too far away from here. They kept him cornered until the police came to arrest him.

While the parents waited for the police to arrive the man made threats that one day he would be free and when he was he would return to this campground to look for the children of those parents who had found him.

According to the newspaper, he escaped from prison today."

Then I would pause and let all I'd said sink in. After a few moments I would suddenly point towards the nearest trees to our campsite and yell out..

"There he IS!!!"

-------

Story Two:

There was a young man and his girlfriend who were driving home late one night. They were driving on a dark and woodsy road out in the country. The car ran out of gas.

The man told his girlfriend he was going to have to walk back a few miles to buy some gas and for her to lock the cars doors, roll up the windows and get down on the floor to hide until he returned. He said for her not to get off the floor no matter what until she heard his voice again.

As he got the empty gas can from the trunk, she did as he said and locked the doors, rolled up the windows and got down on the floor of the car. He called out that he would be back as soon as possible.

A little while after her boyfriend had left, the girl heard the sound of a car stopping nearby. Car doors opened and closed. Yet she stayed on the floor. She heard mumbled voices and the car rocked as people started climbing on it. After a few minutes, which seemed much longer to her, the other people left.

Then the rest of the night she kept hearing a scritch scritch noise on top of the car. She remained on the floor though awaiting the return of her boyfriend.

Daylight came and he still wasn't back, so with cramped muscles, she stepped out of the car. It was then she saw what had been making that noise.. that scritch scritch noise. It was then that she let out a scream that echoed through the woods.

You see, the people who had come in the night had brought her dead boyfriend and tied him upside down to a branch overhanging the road. Every time the wind had blown his fingernails scraped the top of the car.

Scritch scritch.

Just A Quickie

Just a quickie..
Do you own any of those "For Dummies" books? If so, which one(s)?

What The Pluck?

In the post below this one I listed six random things about myself. Here's another one.

Every couple weeks I mutter these three little words to my husband.. "Pluck me, baby." This is because as I've aged I've started sprouting whisker like hairs on my neck.

I'll grab the tweezers, he'll grab a flashlight. Then he plucks me. Slowly and carefully.. and always a steady hand.

Sometimes I will tell him I need a good plucking. Sometimes he doesn't quite hear exactly what I'm saying and will get all excited.

Poor guy. What a disappointment. (Laugh.)

Tagged - Six Random Things

I was tagged to do this "Six Random Things About Me" meme by Peppylady.. a sweet lady who always has the coffee on. There are some rules I'm supposed to post, but I think we all know the basic meme rules by now. Right?

Six Random Things About Me
  1. Typing - I am terrible at typing. I still have to look at the keyboard. I only use two fingers on each hand. The fingers on my left hand are usually also holding a cigarette. (Lots of dropped ashes on my keyboard.)
  2. Music - The first vinyl record album I ever got was by the Mamas & the Papas and included the songs "Monday, Monday" and "California Dreaming."
  3. Cleaning - I'm not as anal picky about keeping my house pristine clean like I used to be.
  4. Coffee - I've never been to a Starbucks.
  5. Location - I've lived in 4 states.. Florida, Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan.
  6. Comprehension - Even though I knew this meme was about listing SIX random things, I hit the publish button after listing only five. (Oops.)
If you want to do this meme on your blog, leave me a comment so I can come see YOUR six random things. (The categories I did here were of my own creation.)

Just A Quickie

Just a quickie..
Do you floss?

Home Style

I consider myself to be a pretty good cook. It didn't used to be that way, though. When I got married the first time I was 17 years old (young?) and didn't know my way around a kitchen very well.

One of my first disasters was making gravy. All I remembered was that I needed bacon grease, this was from my southern upbringing, and flour. So that's all I used. I stirred flour into the bacon grease. Yum yum yum. Bless my first husband's heart for eating it.

Another disaster came quite a few years later. It was right after microwave ovens came into popularity. I thought I'd nuke me up a batch of brownies. I used a regular brownie recipe and didn't adjust down the cooking time as much as I should have. What resulted wasn't brownies. It was more like.. um.. chocolate looking bricks. The dog wouldn't even eat them. (My kids still joke about those brownies.)

I'm glad to say my finesse in the kitchen did improve. In fact I finally got to the point where I could brag, "I cook like your mother wanted to, and your grandmother did."

It was all about not using recipes. Using common sense. Cooking up old "stick to your rib" type meals like chicken and dumplings with a side of cornbread loaded with so much butter it dripped down to your elbows. I cringe now, sure, but man oh man was it good!

And I never used cisco oil. Oops.. Crisco Oil. (See how clever I am with working in those links?) It was all about the bacon grease.

Just A Quickie

Just a quickie..
What is the first candy you look for in your bag (or your child's bag) after Trick or Treating? What candy will you never eat?

Wear Sunscreen

My 52nd birthday was on the 12th of this month.. so when I got this email just now, I had to smile and nod at some of the things I read. Maybe you will, too.

"Something to look forward to as we draw nearer to it... Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother), but I don't agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.

I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60's & 70's and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love .. I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live for ever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day. (If I feel like it.)"

How long has it been since you played Monopoly?

A Pirate..

The pirate replies, "Yar! I have a Bounty on me head."

Love In The 1st Degree

I met my husband over eight years ago and on the 28th of this month we will celebrate our third wedding anniversary. The road we traveled to get to the point we eventually arrived at was not always smooth and carefree.

We both came from homes that did not provide ideal role models. We both had had first marriages that left us with some baggage. Because of these things our relationship had maybe as many ups as it did downs.

We both underwent a learning process as the years went by and have finally reached a better place.

BUT!

Seven years ago when we became engaged thoughts of engagement rings swirled around in my head. I hinted that I wanted one. I came right out and said that I wish I had one. His response was that he wouldn't buy one until he was sure that at some point I wouldn't take it off and throw it at him.

Having a ring isn't such as big a deal for me anymore. I don't need one to know how much he loves me. (Smile.)

Just A Quickie

Just a quickie..
Have you put away your summer things (indoor and/or outdoor) yet?

Say That Again?

I had an MRI done of my brain not too long ago. Today at an appointment with my primary physician I found out the results. I still have a brain he says. I told him hubby might tend to disagree at times...

I asked the doctor what then was causing the symptoms I had mentioned that prompted the scheduling of the MRI? He said it was my anxiety.

A little background in case anyone doesn't know. I'd been on psyche meds for over twenty years. All shapes and sizes of them, too. Ones for anxiety, ones for panic, ones for depression and /or bipolar. Problem was it finally hit me that after twenty years why had none of them really ever worked?

So I weaned myself off them, one type at a time, near the beginning of this year. And for the most part I've done very well.

Now, back to what I was saying. The doctor said it was my anxiety. I told him I didn't think it was. He looked at me with one of those "who is the doctor here" looks. I followed up by saying I realized what he saying based on him being a doctor and all and all I was saying was how I was feeling. (What a suck up I can be at times.)

So he started writing down my symptoms.. the ones I'd told him about that prompted the MRI. Loss of memory, confusion, disorganized thinking, and maybe a few more.

Then it was as if a light bulb went off over his head and he said the nurse was going to bring me in a two page questionnaire to fill out. (I thought oh goodie.. a meme!) I filled out the questionnaire, the nurse took it back to the doctor, who came back to the examination room they had stashed me in.

He asked me who else in my family has ADHD. Say what? He said according to my answers, I have ADHD and that the symptoms I had given him also fit with that.

Well gosh.

My oldest grandson is on medication for ADHD. It was suspected my oldest son might have had ADD, but he was never tested. My mom has a touch of ADD as well.

As I was driving from the doctor office to Walgreens to drop off my prescription I was thinking. I wonder if all those years I was taking pysche drugs ..? What if I really didn't need them?

Tomorrow I start taking Ritalin.

You are very comfortable, easy going, and you definitely know how to have fun but sometimes you take it to an extreme. You always know what you are doing and you are always in control of your life. Others may not see things as you do, but that doesn't mean that you always have to do what is right. Try to remember, your happy spirit may hurt you or others.

(17-23 points) You are Snoopy:
You are fun; you are very cool and popular. You always know what's in and you ' re never out of style , you are good at knowing how to satisfy everyone else. You have probably disappeared for a few days more than once but you always come home with the family values that you learned Being married and having children are important to you, but only after you have had your share of fun times

My Answer:

I Tag:

Mom Knows Everything
Shannon's Moments of Introspection
Lulu's Petals

(Does Spongebob have any ipods?)

Red Light Green Light

Looking back on things I can see so many wasted opportunities I had while raising my kids. Times when I could have been more attentive, more comforting, more supportive. Truth be told, I can also look back on my own childhood and wish I would have perhaps had more of those things from my mother.

I think this is not an uncommon thought from most people at least some of the time. None of us are perfect, therefore we cannot always be the perfect parent. (Or child.)

There are some things I think I did right though. One of those things is playing games with them and a favorite of mine, and I hope a good memory for them, was playing outside on the sidewalk.

Games like Mother May I, Red Rover, and of course, Red Light Green Light.

The way we played Red Light Green Light was to have them (and usually a bunch of neighbor kids) on the sidewalk at one end in front of our house and me on the other end. I would quickly turn away from them calling out "Green Light!" I would wait a few seconds then call out "Red Light" as I turned back around. They would try to move closer to me while my back was turned, and then not be moving when I turned back around. To be caught moving meant you had to go back to the starting line. The first to touch me was the winner.

I was reminded of this game just a few minutes ago when one of my daughters-in-law sent me a video of a kitty trying to be sneaky.

It's been a long time since I've played Red Light Green Light and an even longer time since I've had to think about things like crib bedding. But it IS a fond memory for me.

What games did you play with your parents?

Doctor, Doctor (Gave Me The News)

I went to see the Gastroenterologist today. This appointment was made by my primary physician to follow up on the pancreas trouble I had a few weeks ago, and also last April.

I'm scheduled to have an Endoscope procedure done on the 27th. I thought I'd post a video of what that procedure is like. Look at the size of that tube!

I'm also scheduled for an abdominal MRI this Saturday at (gasp) 7am.

You can play this at Heads Or Tails!

I've heard many ways to conserve this planet's resources.. and even do a few already. (Not nearly enough, though.) With that in mind I did an experiment this morning.

[Yes, this will tie in with the theme soon.]

You see, I always let the water run while brushing my teeth. I've heard that it's a waste of water, so I decided to see just how much I've been wasting. Here's what I ended up with..

TEN glasses of water!!!

Sometimes you hear things. Sometimes you just have to SEE for yourself. I will now being turning OFF the water while brushing my teeth.

Now for a G video!

Who Let The Dogs Out?

You Are a Beagle

You are good natured. You enjoy spending time with people and animals.

You have a wild, independent streak. If you're left to your own devices, you get in trouble.

You love to eat and enjoy food of all kinds. If you don't get enough physical activity, you tend to have a weight problem.

You are very stubborn. You don't like authority, and you tend to do your own thing no matter what.

If you can't find the door to let the dogs out you could always look for an exit sign.

Another Birthday!

Yesterday was my birthday as some of you know. (Thank you for all the birthday wishes!!!)

Well, today is my friend Shannon's birthday, so I hope everyone rushes over there to wish her a happy day, too.

Go on.. quit reading. Shoo!

Camera Critters - Silly Dog

You can play this at Camera Critters!

I've never tried to refer to my dog Sasha as being a smart dog. In fact, when people ask what kind of dog she is I tell them she is a Border Collie/Stupid dog mix. Of course we love her just the same!

Earlier this week she did something I KNEW had to be posted in Camera Critters! (Better late than never.. I got a slow start on the day.)

You see a couple years ago we got new living room furniture in a kind of off-white color. Sasha used to be allowed on the couch, but with her being black and the furniture being new and light colored, we didn't want her to do that anymore.

We thought about getting a baby gate, but those are pricey just to use for a dog, so I put my mind to work and decided to buy a cheap expandable window screen to block her way to the living room overnight. And it worked!

So, like I was saying, the other day I woke up and saw this. The screen was down. And she wouldn't step over it.

Silly dog.

Happy Birthday!

To ME!!!!

Today I am 52 years old. Almost unimaginable. I don't FEEL that old, that's for sure. I am mostly reminded of it when I look in a mirror and see all the wrinkles and saggy skin. (Laugh.)

Although hubby didn't give me a trip to las vegas nevada he did bring me coffee in bed, sang the birthday song to me, and gave me such a sweet card it made me cry. (I got my gift last week.. the new car!)
